Expotherapy

In addition to traditional therapies, I offer psychotherapeutic sessions in a museum setting. An approach where we use aesthetic experience as a strategic modality to work on emotions. Many studies report the beneficial effects of artistic pieces in the field of mental health. Jung spoke at length on the subject. The artistic work and active imagination allow us to touch on an archetypal symbolism. These universal models promote a balance of the parts of the personality (Bowman, 2017). Figurative art, in contrast to abstract art, often depicts episodes from Greco-Roman mythology.

According to Jung and other recent thinkers, mythology and aesthetic experience seem to promote an effect of amplification of consciousness: the individual comes to consciously touch a content of his personality that was unconscious until then. In other words, art allows the individual to know himself through powerful visual metaphors (Davis, 2020). In addition, myths contain a language that would activate the right brain, the seat of emotions, the only one where “therapeutic changes can occur” (Watzlawick, 1980). Moreover, museums and art galleries are free, non-stigmatizing places, thus encouraging speech and introspection. Marković defines aesthetic experience as a separate state of consciousness (2012 in Mastandrea et al. 2019)

This method is the result of in-depth readings inspired by the writings of Jungian psychoanalyst Bolen and of deepening artistic and philosophical studies throughout my academic and personal journey. In an unusual psychotherapeutic session, I accompany the patient in the discovery of his own myth and in an elevation of self-awareness.

Course of the sessions: Sessions can be done in person or remotely. Please contact me directly if interested.
The Expotherapy session is always part of a psychotherapeutic follow-up that has already started. It may be a single session or a series of sessions, but it is intended to be a brief and complementary approach focused on solutions.

My life experience and my eclectic academic background between France and Germany allow me to take charge of a wide range of personal and professional issues. In my practice, I combine a Western academic and scientific approach to psychology with its spiritual and existential dimension. What is psychology if not the "science of the soul"?
